Thousands of people paid their last respects to chief parliamentary secretary and BJP MLA Amarjit Singh Sahi, who was cremated with state honours in his native town, Dasuya, on Monday.
Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia, industries minister Anil Joshi, forest minister Surjit Kumar Jiyani, Rajya Sabha member Avinash Rai Khanna and state BJP president Ashwani Sharma were among those who attended the cremation. A guard of honour was given before the body was consigned to the flames. Sahi's son Harsimrat Singh lit the pyre.
The chief minister expressed condolences to Sahi's wife Sukhjit Kaur and other family members. He said the BJP leader's untimely death had created a void in state politics. Later, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal arrived at Sahi's residence and spent some time with the bereaved family.
The two-time MLA had died of a heart attack in Chandigarh on Sunday morning.
