SFU North America's only varsity to offer bhangra class for university credit

Vancouver's Simon Fraser University is the only university in North America that offers bhangra dance class for university credit. Vancouver's Simon Fraser University is the only university in North America that offers bhangra dance class for university credit.

The 'Introduction to Contemporary Popular Dance Forms: Modern and Traditional Bhangra' course, back after a three year hiatus, was filled to capacity by the third day of registration for SFU's spring term. Fifty students have registered and 20 more are waiting in case a spot comes up.

"The course is unique because it's a cultural dance form that's being offered by a top university. People are so excited to learn about a different culture, work out and have some fun," said course instructor Gurpreet Sian in a press release.

Interestingly, there are no South Asian students in the class. The students who are there say they want to expand their horizons and explore the rich history and culture of bhangra.
