The deceased was Sumeet Kaur, of Swara village, near Kharar. The woman was pursuing a bachelors degree in computer science engineering (final year).

Investigating officer (IO) Rajesh Kumar said that divers had fished the body out from the canal near the Patiala-Nabha highway on Monday morning.

Police teams were alerted and they had rushed to the spot. Police retrieved the woman’s college identity card from her pocket.

Police scanned the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage that shows the victim leaving campus at around 6am. “Preliminary investigation suggests that she might have consumed some poisonous substance before jumping into the canal,” the IO said.

The exact cause of death can be ascertained after post-mortem, he added.

Dean (student welfare wing) Maneek Kumar said that Sumeet had cleared all her semester exams. “She was yet to submit the final project report before graduation. We will look into her academic records to determine if she was stressed,” Kumar said.

The victim’s parents had reportedly talked to her before the incident. She had told them about returning home.

The body was handed over to the kin. Police have started inquest proceedings under Section 174 (to inquire and report on suicide, etc) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) after recording statements of the family members.
