Three arrested for drug peddling, smuggling liquor

The anti-narcotics and anti-illicit liquor smuggling wing has arrested three persons in two cases of drug peddling and liquor smuggling. In the first case, the accused, identified as Vikram Singh, 22, a resident of Daba area, was arrested after 40gm smack worth `10 lakh was recovered from his possession near Dholewal on Saturday.

Sub-inspector Harbans Singh, incharge of anti-narcotics and anti-illicit liquor smuggling wing, said the police had installed a barricade near Dholewal Bridge on a tip-off. Meanwhile, Vikram, a native of Karnal in Haryana, was stopped for checking and smack worth `10 lakh was recovered from his pocket.

Harbans said the accused was a labourer and started selling drugs three months ago to make easy money.He said the court had sent the accused in police remand and they would investigate from where the accused bought the smack and to whom he used to sell it.

A case under different sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered.

In another case, the police arrested Amit Kapoor and Dimple Shegal of Mohalla Hargobind Nagar, after they were found carrying 40 bottles of illicit liquor in Salem Tabri.

The police installed a check point near Jalandhar bypass, and stopped the accused, who were riding a motorcycle and coming from Jalandhar side, and found liquor in their possession.

The sub-inspector said Amit was the owner of a hosiery shop that dealt in woollens in Mochpura Bazaar, while Dimple owned a printing press unit.He said the accused were smuggling liquor from Jalandhar at cheaper rates that was supposed to be sold in city.

A case under the Excise Act has been registered against the accused at Salem Tabri police station.
