In a major breakthrough, the Amritsar police have recovered 5 kg heroin, valued at Rs 25 crore in the international market, with the arrest of two persons.
The accused were identified as Harjinder Singh alias Mohni and Harjinder Singh alias Billa. The seizure was made by a team of Cantonment police station.
In a statement issued here on Monday, counter intelligence IG Gaurav Yadav said, "The preliminary questioning of the arrested persons has revealed that they are members of a top drug trafficking cartel and were transporting the consignment of 5 kg heroin when nabbed by the police".
The suspects had procured this consignment from the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kashmir and it was meant for supply to the international market, claimed the police official while adding that Harjinder alias Mohni was the kingpin of the gang.
23 KG HEROIN SEIZED ACROSS PUNJAB
Giving details about the state-wide haul of heroin made recently, the IG said, "The Punjab Police have seized 23 kg heroin in four days (from June 6 to 9) and arrested 12 persons, including five top druglords, in operations carried out in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Jalandhar and Patiala. We have uncovered inter-state and international drug trafficking routes".
The police officer claimed that out of the 12 persons arrested in past four days, Surinder Kumar resident of Bareilly, Ajit Singh of Jaitowali village of Jalandhar district, Varinder Singh Sandhu of Abohar, Gurjit Singh of Tarn Taran and Harjinder Singh alias Mohni of Amritsar district are the among the top druglords.
On June 6, the Amritsar police commissionerate had arrested two smugglers and seized 1 kg heroin from them, two weapons, one car and 14 cartridges.
On June 7, the Tarn Taran Police had arrested one person identified as arrested Gurjit Singh and recovered 13 kg heroin, 4 foreign-made small weapons, 20 cartridges, Rs 36 lakh and 1 Pak SIM. The arrested person was a member of the notorious gang of criminals and drug smugglers, headed by Gurjant Singh alias Bholu who was operating in tandem with Vicky Kapoor of village Havelian.
His interrogation has revealed vital clues about the supply line of heroin and illegal weapons from Punjab to other states and metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai.
The IG further said, "On June 7, a police party of Jalandhar district had exposed three different heroin supply lines and arrested five drug smugglers in an operation resulting in recovery of 4 kg heroin, Rs 40 lakh and 3 cars. The heroin was meant for transportation to metropolitan cities outside Punjab. One Uttar Pradesh-based smuggler Surinder Kumar was arrested with 1.75 kg heroin and `5 lakh while travelling in Tata Indica Car".
This operation has busted different supply lines and also provided valuable clues about smuggling of heroin to UP, Sri Lanka and other destinations in the international market, he added.
"Punjab Police has cracked open yet another synthetic drug trafficking cartel with the arrest of NRI Varinder Singh Sandhu and his associate Bikramjit Singh alias Pappi in district Patiala on June 3, with recovery of 3008.54 kg precursor chemical pseudoephedrine, 2 kg intoxicating chemical and 2 vehicles," IG Yadav said.
