Union food processing minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Monday praised NGO Sikh International Aid for providing support to Rohingya Muslims in Bangladesh but refused to comment on the central government’s decision to deport them.
“Sikhs are known to be at the forefront to help those in distress — be it the floods in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, or the Rohingya refugees, the Sikhs are only doing what our esteemed gurus have taught us,” said the Bathinda MP here.
Her statement came minutes after the central government termed Rohingya refugees as serious threat in its affidavit in the Supreme Court. Later, Harsimrat visited the family of BSF ASI Kamaljit Singh in Nangal Kalan village, who was killed in firing by Pakistani troops in J&K’s Poonch.
Harsimrat also denied SAD’s involvement in the disconnection of power and water supply to the residence of former jathedar Giani Gurmukh Singh. Gurmukh Singh had alleged that the SGPC had taken the step on the instructions of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and he was being punished for speaking the truth about the apology given to Sirsa dera head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
