Upset over crop damage, farmer commits suicide

Upset over his wheat crop getting damaged, a 70-year-old farmer committed suicide at Chatha Nanhera village near Jhajli in Sangrur district on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Sukhdev Singh, who owned a three-biga land in the village.

Upset over his wheat crop getting damaged, a 70-year-old farmer committed suicide at Chatha Nanhera village near Jhajli in Sangrur district on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Sukhdev Singh, who owned a three-biga land in the village.

Besides the crop damage, he was also unable to pay a bank loan worth `4.5 lakh, he had taken to do contract farming.

The police said the family got to know about the suicide when Sukhdev's son went to his room to serve him tea, only to find him hanging with the ceiling fan.

Sukhdev's brother Gobind Singh said, "Sukhdev was stressed after his crop failed due to unfavorable weather conditions. He had taken more than 30-biga land on contract."

"He earned his living from contract farming and could not bear the stress of unexpected loss due to crop damage. Moreover, he was also unable to pay installments of the loan he had taken,"added Gobind.

The police have handed over the body to Sukhdev's family after postmortem.
