Demanding an immediate rollback of the decision, the agitators raised slogans against the state government and also burnt the effigy of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Addressing the gathering, Youth Congress district president Poonam Kangra said the decision of closing down 690 schools was against the students belonging to the weaker sections.

She said Dalit students would be most affected with the decision as they contributed maximum to the strength of government schools.

As many as 16 schools in Sangrur district situated within a radius of 1 km will be merged or shifted to some other places.

She said the focus of the government was to promote liquor and to open new liquor vends in villages, while it had failed to take a serious note of improving education and other facilities in government schools.
