Balloon trailer: Jai and Anjali starrer is slated to release on December 29.

Jai and Anjali’s Balloon has had audiences excited for a long time. Finally, after weeks of anticipation, the trailer for the horror film was released on December 15 and it’s more creepy than scary. Be it the Balloon in mid air, or the creepy Annabelle-like doll - it has all the elements that have been successful in the horror genre. After a point however, you end up frustrated because this is not going to be a true-blue horror film. Instead, it’s a formulaic horror comedy that aims at entertaining families.

The redeeming factor of this trailer is probably the flashback, in which we see Janani Iyer and Jai’s romance unfold. It is interesting because of the time period, and Jai, who plays a shy, timid boy. Otherwise, it would be fair to say that Balloon is yet another movie that is trying to profit from the fact that audiences love a few laughs between the scares. We can also conclude that the ghost from the past doesn’t like Jai - who is enjoying his life and his love affair with Anjali - in the present. The conflict begins. There is probably also a kid ghost, because Jai’s nephew is caught talking to an invisible being.

Another horror comedy is not what we want right now. After a string of them, differentiating between these films has only got harder. While the cast is different, the story is the same. Something that we tend to call ‘done to death’ (pun intended). This one might be an entertaining watch, but it is certainly not special.

Balloon is directed by Sinish and produced by Dhilip Subbarayan, Arun Balaji and Nandakumar. The film is slated for release on December 29.
