As the first shows of Aishwarya’s 3 begin in Chennai and the world over today, the Rajnikanths may be biting their nails in nervous anticipation. Aishwarya is Tamil superstar Rajnikanth’s elder daughter, and her debut 3 seems like a make or mar movie for her.
3 begins with a huge expectation, most of it egged on by one of its songs, Kolaveri D, which some months ago became an unimaginable rage – attracting millions of clicks on YouTube and playing on just about everybody’s lips.
The question is, can a song -- hardly melodious or lyrical and sung by Aishwarya’s husband, Dhanush (who is no Rafi or Mukesh), but yet proving to be so deliriously popular – push a film and get money flowing in? The next 48 hours may well give us a broad indication.
Besides Kolaveri D, the movie packs in generation next from the families of two reigning Tamil superstars, Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan. Dhanush is Rajnikanth’s son-in-law as we know, and pairing with him on the screen is Shruti, Kamal’s daughter from his marriage with Sarika, that wonderful actress who gave us hours of great cinema.
Rajnikanth’s daughters, Aishwarya and Soundarya, have been trying for years to replicate the magic of their father. Soundarya’s 2007 animation venture, Sultan, with Adlibs, touted as a film where Rajnikanth would appear in a never-seen-before role, failed to take off. It led to bitter financial quarrels between the producer and the financier.
Soundarya is now on to Kochadaiyaan. Also animation, this movie will see Rajnikanth for the first time after his illness that kept him confined in a Singapore hospital some months ago. For his fans, this will be a marvellous treat.
Aishwarya’s casting for 3 – Dhanush with Shruti – is viewed as some kind of coup, and with Kolaveri Di getting men and women on their toes, there is not just hype but hope in the air. Publicised as a coming-of-age love story, 3 (a title used by many films since the 1960s) has pushed anticipation to the skies.
