Mahanati’s US box office collection: Keerthy Suresh film earns $500,000 in 2 days
Keerthy Suresh’s Mahanati, a biopic on legendary southern female actor Savitri, has been received very well by audiences and critics alike. According to the film’s overseas distributor Nirvana Cinemas, the Nag Ashwin directed film has taken a terrific start at the box office, earning over $500,000 in the US from premieres and first day.
It’s a huge feat for a biopic which, as a genre, is yet to find acceptance among audiences. Going by the opening at US box office, trade pundits believe the film will end up earning over $2 million in the US.
According to box-office tracking portal Andhra Box office, the film grossed around Rs 6 crore on first day worldwide. Keerthy, in a career-best performance, had recently revealed that this is the most challenging project of her career to date. Mahanati also stars Samantha Akkineni, who plays a journalist, and it is through her eyes that the story of Savitri unfolds. The film also stars Dulquer Salman as Gemini Ganesan, who was married to Savitri.
Speaking about casting Dulquer as Gemini Ganesan, director Nag Ashwin had said, “Dulquer’s character of Gemini Ganesan will not merely be on how the legend will be perceived today based on his work and his image. The character goes beyond the physical resemblance, in understanding the veteran on a more emotional level.”
Mahanati is a period drama, set in the golden era of Telugu cinema. With massive set pieces, the film is unlike anything that has been explored in Indian cinema before. Produced by Vyjayanthi Movies, the Telugu film has been dubbed and released in Tamil as well. Mahanati also stars Shalini Pandey, Rajendra Prasad and Prakash Raj in crucial roles.
