Actor Rima Kallingal and Suraj Venjaranmoodu’s film Abhasam is finally releasing on May 4.
Rima has cited Censor Board as the reason for the delay in the film’s release. She told Manorama Online, “If a movie is to be denied censoring, then that film should violate the rules of the CBFC. But here instead the movies are denied censoring for many other reasons. It is appalling that it happens in a democratic country. The censor board initially said that they had a problem with Surajettan exposing his thigh. When I told this to one of my friends she said, ‘So was it ok to flash thighs in Pulimurugan’. It was then the hypocrisy struck me. If an artist cannot criticise what happens in the society through his art, then it means we are not living in a democracy. Now we are facing exactly what we have shown in our movie.”
The CBFC had earlier certified the film with an ‘A’ certificate, however Abhasam’s cast and crew were not ready to accept this. They protested against CBFC’s certification and after a lot of efforts, the film was finally given the U/A certificate.
Abhasam is directed by debutant Jubith Namradathu. The film also stars Sheethal Syam in a pivotal role. Speaking about the Censor Board’s decision to grant A certificate, Judith had told Manorama Online, ““The censor board is adamant in their ideals. There are no violent or sex scenes in the movie for them to give ‘A’ certificate. Aabhasam is a movie which can be enjoyed by the families. The problem lies when someone approaches the movie with prejudices about its title.”
