Vijay stars in a triple role in Mersal.

If anyone has any doubts about box office clout of Tamil superstar Ilayathalapathy Vijay, then Mersal’s opening day collections should set the record straight.

Vijay’s Mersal got an explosive opening on Day 1 to record a collection of Rs 22.5 crore in Tamil Nadu. This is phenomenal but Vijay still couldn’t beat Rajinikanth. The latter’s film Kabali raked in Rs 23.5 crore on the opening day in the state, reports Forbes.

Mersal also became the highest opening film by Vijay across India. It picked up Rs 34 crore ($5.17 million), the report added.

Here is some data on its opening day collections from across the world:

* Opening day in Kerala: Rs 4.5 crore
* Opening day for Tamil film in UK: £ 94,311 (Rs 81.08 L)
* Mid-week opening day for Tamil film in USA: $481k
* Opening day in India for a Vijay film: Rs 34 crore

And while the Vijay starrer couldn’t overcome the Kabali challenge at home, Mersal overtook it in overseas market, beating all in USA, Malaysia, the Middle East and Australia.

Mersal is the story of a young doctor who returns home from abroad to attend to an urgent health care crisis. As he gets about doing his work, he discovers unsettling details about his father. Directed by Atlee (who is riding on a crest thanks to the successes of his past two films, Theri and Raja Rani), the film’s story is by Vijayendra Prasad of Baahubali fame while AR Rahman has scored the music. The film also stars Samantha Akkineni, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen and SJ Suryah.
