Vijay’s Mersal, amidst controversies from all quarters, is having a dream run and has already stormed into the Rs 150 crore club, making it the second film for the actor after Theri. Interestingly, both Theri and Mersal were directed by Atlee and their combination has worked big time with the masses. Going by the way Mersal is performing at the box-office, it shouldn’t surprise us if it ends up as the first Vijay-starrer to make over Rs 200 crore in gross earnings worldwide. It can be said that all the controversies have really helped the film strike gold at the box-office.

Made on a lavish budget of Rs 130 crore, Mersal opened its account at the box-office with a bang and earned Rs 51 crore worldwide from the first day. It was the one of the biggest openings for an Indian film released in one language this year. Mersal has broken records in many areas including places such as Kerala (over Rs 10 crore), Karnataka (over Rs 10 crore) and even Malaysia (Rs 11.1 crore in five days) where it has set new records. In the US, it has earned over $1 million (Rs 64,964,500) from its opening weekend and will comfortably break even for its distributor this week.

In the film, Vijay plays triple role and he is paired with Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen and Samantha Akkineni. Actor-filmmaker SJ Suryah, who impressed audiences and critics alike as a menacing villain in Spyder, plays the antagonist in this film. Mersal has been dubbed in Telugu as Adhirindi, and it will hit the screens this week in Telugu states. It has music by double Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman.
