American pop singer Madonna has returned to Malawi to undertake charity work with her Raising Malawi organisation, reports said Monday. The 48-year-old star was seen landing at Lilongwe Airport on Monday morning, South African public radio said quoting witness reports.

A spokesperson for the singer confirmed last she week she would be returning to the southern African country, where her adoption of a baby boy last October was surrounded in controversy,

The singer was accused at the time of bypassing the country's laws in seeking to adopt one-year-old David Banda from the orphanage, where his father placed him.

Authorities waived adoption laws in granting Madonna and her British film director husband Guy Richie an interim order and custody of David Banda for 18 months, at the end of which they said Madonna has said she will apply to make the adoption permanent.

Foreign non-residents are not usually allowed to adopt children in the impoverished southern African country that is home to nearly one million orphans, partly as a result of high HIV/AIDS infection levels.
