Love don’t cost a thing, sang Jennifer Lopez, and she is not far off the mark. As Valentine’s Day fever grips shops and eateries, cheesy and expensive gifts and decorations suddenly pop up everywhere. But you don’t have to depend on these options to express your true love. Read our handy guide for some creative ideas:
* Go stargazing with your partner
What better way to spend V-Day than by spotting your favourite stars and enjoying some quiet romantic time with your partner under clear night skies? While candlelight dinners have been done to death, not many can boast of having done this. And it is a great deal cheaper than booking a hotel, or dining at an overpriced restaurant. Pack a picnic and grab a blanket along the way. You won’t regret it.
* Recreate your best date
You don’t need to step out of your home to have a good time. Rustle up some of the dishes you had enjoyed on your first date, bake your partner’s favourite desserts, or rent the first movie you had watched together. Light some candles, listen to songs that are special to you, and serenade your partner.
* Plan a clue hunt
Who said Valentine’s Day has to be restricted to select places? You can hide secret love notes across the house to surprise your partner. Or you can take them to a place that is special to both of you — a beach, river, or park — and scatter some small gifts around. Give them hints and let them turn sleuth.
* Gift potted plants
While exotic cut flowers can be expensive buys, especially on Valentine’s Day, potted plants are cheaper and last way longer. You can opt for bonsai plants or flowering plants which will give you blooms for years to come.
* DIY gift basket
DIY gifts are usually a big hit and reflect the effort put in for the occasion, as opposed to just buying your way out of it. Pick a basket or recycle one and fill it with cute gifts, be it origami flowers, mugs decorated by you with sparkles and glitter, candy (as opposed to fancy chocolates), baked treats and framed photographs. Wrap it in cellophane and tie a ribbon to it.
