NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court’s endorsement last month of the Justice RM Lodha committee recommendations for sweeping reforms in the Indian cricket board has shaken the body.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will take a fresh look at other ongoing court cases as well when its Special General Meeting (SGM) convenes here on Friday to discuss the way forward in implementing the Lodha panel directives. The Apex court ruling on the report came on July 18.
The BCCI spends crores of rupees on a spate of ongoing legal cases, be it involving the Enforcement Directorate, rebel Indian Cricket League or Lalit Modi.
HT has learnt that many state associations have prepared a list of questions and clarifications on the Lodha report, which the Supreme Court said must be implemented by BCCI in six months.
“There is confusion over the ‘cooling-off period’ between two terms. There are many other things. We want clarification from our parent body,” a senior state association member told HT on Thursday.
The Lodha panel has recommended that office-bearers of the BCCI and its affiliates who have completed nine years won’t be eligible for a fresh term. The committee recently clarified that those who had completed nine years on the date of the Supreme Court ruling on the panel’s report won’t be eligible for another term.
State associations will also raise concerns over the constitutional amendments that would be needed to make changes as suggested by the Lodha panel as there are many technical and legal aspects that needed to be gone into.
The BCCI is also likely to discuss a new, more lucrative IPL broadcasting rights contract as the current deal with Sony ends after the next season.
The Lodha committee had recommended that no advertisements should be shown during change of ends in international matches as it affects the viewing experience of fans. However, the Apex court has left it to the BCCI to decide, while taking the panel’s recommendations into account.
