RIO DE JANEIRO: French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie has apologised for comparing the booing he was subject to during the men’s Olympic final on Monday to the hostility of Nazi Germany towards Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Games.
Lavillenie, the world record holder, gave the crowd a thumbs down at the start of his run-up in attempt to get them to stop the jeers. “In 1936 the crowd was against Jesse Owens. We’ve not see this since. We have to deal with it,” he said. On Tuesday, however, he accepted that it was an inappropriate reference.
