MUMBAI: Eric Moussambani was granted a wildcard entry to the 2000 Sydney Games without qualification because of an initiative to encourage developing nations with little facilities. The lack of facilities was apparent as Moussambani splashed and struggled in his heats, first to the laughter of the spectators which later turned into cheers at his effort. The man from Equatorial Guinea eventually finished the heats in 1 minute 52.72 seconds; more than double the time taken by the eventual winner.
