DOUGLAS: Harika Dronavalli has beaten Germany’s Thomas Paehtz in the fourth round of the Isle of Man International chess tournament. The Indian GM now has 2.5 points with two wins, one draw and one loss in this elite tournament.
“It was a complex game,” said Harika after her victory here on Tuesday. “But I turned it in my favour. I am happy with the way it turned out,” she added.
Harika next faces Scotland’s GM Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant in the fifth round.
INDIAN HOCKEY JUNIORS REMAIN UNBEATEN
Perth: Indian junior men’s hockey team produced an inspiring second-half performance as they beat Western Australia Thundersticks 3-1 in their final Pool B encounter of the Australian Hockey League.
The win kept India unbeaten in the tournament and put them at the top of Pool B.
The Thundersticks captain Chris Bausor converted his team’s second penalty corner to take the lead but Sumit scored the goal to draw the visitors level.
Of their first penalty corner, Varun Kumar found the net in the 39th minute and scored his second off another PC.
India will now take on Victorian Vikings in the first semifinal on October 7.
FOUR IN JOINT LEAD IN WOMEN’S PGT EVENT
Gurgaon: Vani Kapoor, Neha Tripathi, Amandeep Drall and Gaurika Bishnoi carded identical scores of two-over 74 to share the opening day lead in the 15th Leg of the Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour.
Trailing them by a single stroke in fifth position is Chandigarh’s Saaniya Sharma at three-over 75.
Hero Order of Merit leader Vani Kapoor had an indifferent start to her round, carding bogeys on the 1st, 5th and 8th holes, with a lone birdie on the 9th in her front nine.
She played with much more control in the latter half, carding two birdies on the 15th and 16th holes, while dropping shots on the 10th and 13th.
Saaniya Sharma played a round of three-over 75 on the day to take the fifth position.
