NEW DELHI: Former Internazionale and Bayern Munich star Lucimar Ferreira da Silva has returned to the Indian Super League (ISL) as a marquee player for the troubled FC Goa.

The Brazilian international, nicknamed Lucio, was a mainstay of his national team with 105 appearances, and scored four goals as a part of the 2002 World Cup winning team.

Lucio, 38, first joined FC Goa in 2015, to play under fellow national star Zico, the team’s head coach. FC Goa was handed a Rs 10cr (reduced to Rs 6cr) fine earlier this year and its owners were banned for multiple seasons for violating tournament regulations.

Delhi Dynamos FC strengthened their defense by signing Ghanaian left back David Nii Addy. The 26-year-old has signed for Dynamos after his two-year long stint with the Belgian Pro club Waasland Beveren, where he was a regular feature.

GHOSAL, CHINAPPA REACH QUARTERS

Shanghai: India’s Saurav Ghosal upset world number 8 Miguel Rodriguez of Colombia to advance to the quarterfinals of the PSA China Open. Ghosal fought back to beat his Colombian rival 11-9, 8-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-5 in the opening round of the $100,000 men’s event.

In the $70,000 women’s event, Joshna Chinappa entered the quarterfinals with a 8-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-7 win over Egyptian qualifier, while teammate Dipika Pallikal lost to third seed, another Egyptian Nouran Gohar, in straight games.

LONDON: More than a million people have applied for tickets for next year’s world athletics championships in London where greats Usain Bolt and Mo Farah will compete for the final time on the track.

Jamaican Bolt, who completed a triple-triple of 100, 200 and 4x100 metres relay at last month’s Olympics, and Briton Farah, who retained the 5,000 and 10,000 titles in Rio, have both said next year’s championships will be their last.
