Mixed luck for Santosh, Aravind

NEW DELHI: It was a disappointing day for CS Santosh at the the OiLibya Rally Morocco, the final round of the FIM Cross Country Rally World Championship, on Wednesday. The 31-year-old from Bengaluru, who is riding for the Hero MotoSports team, failed to finish the third stage (second leg of the marathon run) of the rally — a 200-km run dubbed the “Oriental route” by the race organisers.

Aravind KP of Team Sherco TVS, the other Indian in the rally, continued his good run to climb three places in the overall standings to 25th. Santosh’s Hero teammate, Joaquim Rodrigues, was in 16th position according to the provisional results released at the end of the day.

After Tuesday’s 291-km stage, the riders had left the bikes in the parc ferme as only the competitors were allowed to work on the machines with no mechanical assistance permitted from the team. Things looked good for Santosh, who had a good start on Wednesday morning from the camp at M’Hamid, at the foot of the dunes. But he had to stop around 185km into the stage due to an electrical failure.

A team official confirmed his bike would be retrieved and repaired in time to restart the rally on Thursday, in the 376km fourth stage (319km of timed special stage).
