MUMBAI: West Germany hosting the 1972 Munich Olympics was thought of as a restoration of peace and joy. Unfortunately the Games saw the worst terrorist attack in the history of the Olympics. Eleven Israeli athletes and coaches — many of whom were refugees or children of refugees of Nazi Germany — were taken hostage by Palestinian terrorist group Black September. The athletes and coaches were eventually killed, alongside a West German police officer before the police defused the situation. The Games carried on after flying the Olympic flag at half mast in mourning.
