LONDON: England interim manager Gareth Southgate is among hundreds of rich clients caught up in a multi-million-pound tax avoidance dispute with British authorities, a newspaper reported Friday, on the eve of his first match in charge.

Southgate invested in two partnerships set up by a film investment fund, Ingenious, which is accused by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) of being part of an elaborate scheme to avoid paying tax, the Daily Mirror said.
A source close to the former England player told AFP he made the investments in 2004 in good faith and would not challenge any tax demand that might arise when the case was resolved.
ENGLAND BEAT MALTA
LONDON: Gareth Southgate’s plea for England to play with adventure and style was answered only fitfully as his reign as caretaker manager began with a 2-0 win over Malta in a World Cup Group F qualifier on Saturday.
It took half an hour for the former England defender’s selection to break down a stubborn rearguard but thanks to first-half goals from Daniel Sturridge and Dele Alli they did go some way to meeting Southgate’s demand.
INJURED SNEIJDER OUT OF FRANCE CLASH
THE HAGUE: Dutch captain Wesley Sneijder will miss the mouthwatering visit of France in Monday’s World Cup qualifier after the midfielder aggravated a hamstring injury in the victory over Belarus.
Feyenoord’s Tonny Vilhena 21, will replace the 32-year-old Sneijder.
