Accrington Stanley defender Peter Cavanagh has been suspended from all football activities for eight months for betting on the result of a fourth-tier match in which he was playing.

Accrington Stanley defender Peter Cavanagh has been suspended from all football activities for eight months for betting on the result of a fourth-tier match in which he was playing. The Football Association also fined Cavanagh 3,500 pounds ($5,800) on Monday.

Cavanagh played the full 90 minutes of the 2-0 loss to Bury on the last weekend of the 2008 League Two season.

The English defender was accused of including the match in an accumulator bet of 5 pounds that also included other games.

Regulatory commission chairman Nicholas Stewart said, "These were repeated deliberate breaches of the Football Association's betting rules which are vital to maintain confidence in the integrity of the game."
