The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Monday decided to scratch Palestine from the Nehru Cup beginning in New Delhi on August 19.
The tournament, AIFF general secretary Alberto Colaco said, will now be a five-team competition. The dates will remain the same, Colaco said, meaning the final would be on August 31.
“We have decided not to invite Palestine,” Colaco said, one day after it emerged that they were not sending the senior national team. On Sunday, reports on the internet said Palestine would be sending a club team, Hilal Al Quds, which finished ninth in the West Bank Premier League last season.
On confirming this, the AIFF decided to keep them out just as it omitted Thailand on learning that they wanted to send an age-group side for the biennial meet.
Colaco said competition would now be played in the round-robin league format with the top teams playing the final. Fresh fixtures would be announced on Tuesday.
