Nigeria legend Yekini dies at 48

Former Nigeria football star Rashidi Yekini died on Friday after suffering from mental illness for the past two years. He was 48. Yekini is Nigeria’s all-time record goalscorer; with 37 goals in 58 matches for the Super Eagles.

Who can forget the image of him scoring Nigeria’s first-ever Fifa World Cup goal and clutching the goal net thereafter? That was after he had scored against Bulgaria in the 1994 finals in the USA. Yekini was the first Nigerian player to win the African Footballer of the Year title in 1993 and helped Nigeria win the African Cup of Nations in 1994.
