Lazio had two good chances in the first half when Brazil goalkeeper Julio Sergio denied close-range efforts from Czech Libor Kozak.

It was Roma, however, to take the lead in the second half with a spot kick converted by Marco Borriello after Stephan Lichtsteiner handled a cross.

Lazio's equalizer came one minute later from a drive that Hernanes drilled into the left angle as Tommaso Berni, who was filling in for Fernando Muslera, dove on the opposite corner.

Brazil Fabio Simplicio scored Roma's winner with 12 minutes left as he snatched a defence clearance and fired home on Berni's left.

Earlier Wednesday, Sampdoria qualified after beating guests Udinese in a 5-4 penalty shoot-out that followed a 2-2 draw.

On Tuesday, Napoli secured a quarter-final berth with a 2-1 win over guests Bologna at Naples's San Paolo stadium.

Serie A leaders AC Milan play the last game of the round of 16 when they welcome minnows Bari Thursday.

Trophy holders Inter Milan, Juventus, Palermo and Parma have already qualified for the quarter finals scheduled for next week.
