Earlier, top-ranked Novak Djokovic beat Milos Raonic in straight sets to bring Serbia level with Canada at 2-2.
Djokovic won 7-6 (1), 6-2, 6-2 in a 2-hour, 8-minute match on indoor clay at Belgrade Arena. “This is like the (fooball) World Cup for us,” Djokovic said. Serbia had won the event in 2010 while Canada were playing their maiden semis.
Tomic steers Aussies
WARSAW: Australia are back in the World Group for the first time in six years, with Bernard Tomic supplying the crucial third point against Poland with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win over Lukasz Kubot on Sunday.
The victory means the 28-time Davis Cup champions, will return to the top 16 next year for the first time since 2007.
Rookie seals deal
BERLIN: Rookie Daniel Brands maintained Germany’s Davis Cup World Group status by sealing a 3-1 victory over Brazil after stepping in as a late replacement after illness to Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Brands, 26, who made his Davis Cup debut in Saturday’s doubles, enjoyed a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 win over Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci having stepped in after Kohlschreiber suffered stomach problems.
Murray secures berth
UMAG: Andy Murray secured Britain’s return to the Davis Cup World Group after a five-year absence when he defeated Croatia’s Ivan Dodig 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in a playoff rubber at Umag. That made the match score 3-1 in Britain’s favour.
For Croatia, the defeat means that they fall out of the World Group for the first time since 2008, having won the trophy in 2005.
madrid: Marc Lopez and Fernando Verdasco both won reverse singles matches Sunday to give Spain a 5-0 sweep of Ukraine in their playoff. Lopez had paired with Rafael Nadal to win Saturday’s doubles match for an unassailable 3-0 advantage for the hosts.
