Delnaaz Irani,soulmate,fat girl image

Television actor Delnaaz Irani might feel she’s cornered by her ‘funny girl’ image at times, but she doesn’t want to shed it, as she loves entertaining her viewers. Now, as things are looking up for her — she’s in love and has signed a new TV show — she talks to us about her soulmate and what lies ahead in her career.

Comic roles seemed to have shaped your career. What do you think has been the role of comedy in your life?
It has been tremendous. When I began acting, I never thought I’d excel at comedy. But today, now that I have been accepted in comic roles, I don’t want to change my image. I am already doing one show, and I have signed another. I work for appreciation. But in our country, being fat is still considered comic and slipping on a banana peel, hilarious; we have not grown past that.

Did you participate in Big Boss in 2012 to showcase your serious side?
Vrajesh (Hirjee, co-contestant) and I were expected to be funny on the show, but we ended up having several serious conversations. I was very focussed on my principles and values, and I was not bothered about the world. It (the series) showed me in a different light... and I think it was a good move as people saw another side to me.

You’re in love now; do you find yourself being on guard about not making the same mistakes you made in your previous, high-profile relationship?
Yes, I am still cautious. I won’t say everything is rosy and wonderful. But that’s not his (boyfriend, Percy Karkaria) fault, as this feeling has become part of me due to my [past] experiences. We are happy together and I think of him beyond love, marriage and all (sic). We don’t need that [label] as we are soulmates. We are there for each other just like your parents will always be there for you.

So, is marriage around the corner?
Not as of now... or for a really long time.

But do you want to get married again?
Frankly, I’m not keen on marriage. I’ve seen it all; I was married for 14 years. I do believe in the institution even though I have been hurt and had a bad experience. But I wouldn’t want to do it all over again. You need someone who will be there for you in your old age. For me, Percy is like an angel and has selfless love for me. He doesn’t expect anything from me. And as he too has had a bad marriage, he isn’t looking for the same. '
