Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Garbine Muguruza achieved a unique feat this month as for the first time since 2003, two players from the same country grabbed the No 1 ATP and WTA rankings in men’s and women’s category.
Nadal entered the US Open 2017 as the top-ranked player and according to Baseline, with Roger Federer bowing out in the quarterfinal round; he is likely to stay at the top.
On the other hand, with Karolina Pliskova losing in the fourth round, the Wimbledon 2017 winner Muguruza will rise to the top spot in the women’s rankings for the first time.
Nadal had risen to the top spot in ATP Rankings ahead of the Cincinnati Open 2017 when Federer withdrew from the competition, thus becoming the world No 1 for the first time since 2014. Nadal had surpassed Britain’s Andy Murray in the process, who withdrew from the Canadian Open as well as Cincinnati Open owing to a hip injury.

According to tennis.com, Muguruza is the 24th player to rise to the top spot in WTA Rankings after wins in the Wimbledon 2017 as well as in the WTA event at Cincinnati.
The last instance of players from the same country ascending to the top spots was witnessed in 2003, when Andre Agassi and Serena Williams reached the No 1 positions in their respective rankings.
