Rohan Bopanna and Pablo Cuevas win Monte Carlo Masters doubles crown

Rohan Bopanna and Uruguayan partner Pablo Cuevas defeated the Spanish team of Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 to win the men’s doubles title at the Monte Carlo Masters

India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Uruguayan partner Pablo Cuevas lifted the men’s doubles crown at the Monte Carlo Masters after registering a hard- fought three-set win over Spain’s Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez in Monaco on Sunday..

The unseeded pair played out of its skin to get the better of its opponents 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 in the summit-clash of the clay court tournament. The match, played at the Monte Carlo Country Club, lasted an hour and 14 minutes.

The crown is the first of the season for Bopanna and Cuevas pair and the third for the Indian.

Bopanna had earlier won the Chennai Open in January with Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan. He lost in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships, in which he teamed up with Poland’s Marcin Matkowski.

On Saturday, Bopanna and Cuevas defeated Romain Arneodo of Poland and Hugo Nys of France in straight sets to enter the final.

The Indo-Uruguayan combination clinched a 6-4, 6-3 win in an hour-long encounter.

Late on Friday night, they had won a tough three-set battle against Henri Kontinen of Finland and Australia’s John Peers to reach the semis.

Bopanna and Cuevas lost the first set and were made to toil hard before clinching a 3-6, 6-3, 13-11 win in their quarter-final clash which lasted for around one hour and 12 minutes.
