Top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt beat Jan Hernych 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 Tuesday at the Adelaide International men's hardcourt tennis championships.

A sluggish Hewitt dropped his serve twice in the first set. He was also broken by Hernych while serving for the match at 5-3, but Hewitt did the same to the Czech player in the following game to clinch the match.

Hewitt had foot injury troubles early in 2005. He decided not to compete in the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, China in November because it coincided with the expected birth of his first child, a daughter, with Australian actress Rebecca Cartwright.

In another match Australian wild card Mark Philippoussis, a former US Open finalist, took a positive step in his latest comeback attempt with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over American Vince Spadea.

It was Philippoussis' first singles match at Memorial Drive since his Davis Cup defeats against Sweden in early 2004.

"It's good to get out on court and get that monkey, that turned into a gorilla, off my shoulders," the 29-year-old Philippoussis said.

"I've been working hard in Miami (his hometown) for the past 2 1-2 months to build up to this summer. I know I still have my best tennis yet to play."
