Venus Williams produced a superb fightback to reach the championship match at the WTA Finals, before stating with a smile: “It’s not over ‘til the fat lady sings ... and I’m not fat!”

Williams came from a set down to beat Caroline Garcia in Saturday’s second semi-final, the veteran American ultimately triumphing 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 6-3.

Caroline Wozniacki now stands between Williams and the title in Singapore and the latter’s delight was clear for all to see in an on-court interview.

“One more match,” said Williams. “I’m going to be playing against one of the best players in the tournament, another Caroline. It’s gonna be like deja vu. I’m excited, she’s a great friend and I’m happy for one of us to win tomorrow [Sunday].”

On the challenge she faced against Garcia, the 37-year-old added: “She competed so well this whole tournament and every time I thought I was getting close, she would play amazing.

“You know, it’s not over ‘til the fat lady sings and I’m not fat. I watch my figure! It’s hard to produce your best tennis at the end of the year because you’ve given so much, but this tournament is one of the best tournaments. It’s the top eight players in the world, so nothing is easy and to be almost standing in the winners’ circle is amazing.”
