‘Electricity bill no proof that structure is authorised’
The Bombay High Court has stated that electricity bills cannot be considered proof of legitimacy of a building structure. The court made the observation in an effort to curb illegal constructions. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. has agreed to include a statement on its bills and applications clarifying that the bill does not prove authorization or ownership of the premises. The court will continue to hear the matter on January 3.

Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and the Registration and Stamp Department have developed a system to streamline the process of transferring electricity connections for buyers of old properties. The new integration will significantly reduce the time and effort required. Buyers can now easily have the electricity connection or bill transferred to their name after the registration of residence.
