Pakistan off terror financing ‘grey list’ after four years

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) placed Pakistan on its list of countries under increased monitoring, or the so-called grey list, in June 2018 for its failure to tackle terror financing, especially the activities of UN-designated terror groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

Who is T Raja Kumar, the new chief of global terror financing watchdog FATF?

Raja Kumar succeeds Dr Marcus Pleyer as the chief of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and will serve a two-year-term. Pakistan has been scrambling in recent months to avoid being added to a list of countries deemed non-compliant with anti-money laundering and terrorist financing regulations by the FATF.

The Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF) placed Pakistan on the grey list in June 2018 and asked Islamabad to implement a plan of action to curb money laundering and terror financing by the end of 2019 but the deadline was extended later on due to Covid-19 pandemic. FATF’s latest plenary is also being held at a time when the US has been irked by the Pakistan Supreme Court’s acquittal of terrorist Omar Saeed Sheikh, the principal accused in the 2002 murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl.

US retains terrorist designation of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba
