Regional grouping ZPM may dent Congress, MNF, BJP poll prospects in Mizoram

Six small regional parties have come together under the Zoram Peoples Movement (ZPM)’s banner to contest the November 28 polls in Mizoram. ZPM is hoping to provide an alternative to the Congress and MNF as well as nix the BJP’s attempt to extend its influence to the Christian-majority state.

In 2015, the state’s Congress government lifted a ban on liquor imposed since 1997. But there is opposition to lifting of the ban by some regional parties and church bodies in the state.

Among the 40 elected legislators who take crucial decisions on shaping the state’s future, only one is a woman. As Mizoram goes to polls one more time on November 28, the scenario isn’t likely to change much. The ruling Congress has given an election ticket to just one woman, Vanlalawmpuii Chawngthu, the lone woman in the assembly who is also a minister.
