The two-storey ‘Value The Hotel Natori’, made up of orange and blue freight containers, is the first of nine hotels planned for the Tohoku region in the Miyagi Prefecture, one of the areas hardest hit by the tsunami in March 2011.

The hotel, run by Tokyo-based hotel operator Kachikaihatsu Co., is built to alleviate the accommodation shortage in the area and is intended for construction workers and volunteers.

Each of the air-conditioned rooms has a television, bar, fridge, desk and a window.

A night’s stay at the hotel costs 8,100 yen ($103) per night and will include breakfast and dinner.

Freight container hotels, often built as temporary lodging to cope with a lack of accommodation facilities, can also be found in other parts of the world. Earlier this year, the 320-room Snoozebox hotel provided accommodation for security personnel engaged at the Olympics Games in London.
