Hina Khan aka Akshara of Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlaata Hai, talks to Rachana Dubey about her character in the serial.
How’s it going?
So far, so good. Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlaata Hai is the number one show on TV.. what more could I have asked for?
Did you expect your first soap to be so successful?
(Chuckles) No.. at least not this soon. It has barely been three months. When we started out, Rajanji’s (producer Rajan Shahi) Bidaai was doing very well. It still is. We just wanted Yeh Rishta.. to match up.
How did you land the role?
I was pursuing a management course in Delhi. One evening, while I was preparing for a presentation, a friend told me that Rajan Shahi was in Delhi. He was auditioning for the lead actress of his next show. I gave it a shot. A few days later, he called me. (Smiles) I was on!
What do you think about your performance in the initial episodes?
It was very difficult for me because I’m not a trained actress. I don’t come from a family of actors either. I’m gradually learning to act.
How close is Hina to Akshara?
They’re both very similar. Hina and Akshara are both simple girls, they both feel at home in salwar kameezes.. they are decent girls from well-to-do families. I’m as close to my parents as Akshara is.. and like her, I never misuse the freedom given to me.
Would Hina marry a boy of her parents’ choice?
Of course! I wouldn’t mind that at all. But my parents wouldn’t mind if I found someone myself either. And this isn’t a difference between Hina and Akshara.. it’s the difference between their families.
But there must be something which isn’t the same about the two of you..
(Laughs) Maybe. But I’m in Akshara’s shoes for 18 hours a day.. and I sleep for the rest. So nowadays, I’m Akshara for most part.
Would you marry someone without knowing him?
It depends. Actually, Akshara isn’t marrying Naitik without dating him. They do meet chhup chhup ke and bahaane bana ke — just to spend time with each other before tying the knot. If my parents were to pick a guy and insist that he’s the best for me, I may not even meet him. (Thinks) But actually, aisa hota nahin hai.. aaj mile aur kal shaadi. There’s always time in between. It’s simply a perception that arranged marriages are not pleasant. I think they work better than love marriages.
How’s Karan Mehra as a co-star?
He’s fantastic. He’s so much like Naitik. It’s such a coincidence that both of us are like our characters.
Akshara is being asked to leave her studies.. would you ever do that?
No way! Why should a girl quit all that she wants to do just because she is is to get married? Boys don’t. Akshara has made it clear that she wants finish her degree before marriage.
Were you ever stopped from doing something?
Never! My father let me pursue everything I wanted to.. even acting. Mum didn’t even know that I had auditioned and was finalised for the role. Dad gave me the go-ahead. He told me not to tell mum till the time was right because she’s quite strict. Not that she had an issue. Mum accompanies me to the shoots now.
You’re still in college, right?
Yup. My final semester’s on. Then I’m through.
Aren’t your parents after you to get married?
Nope.. and that’s a good thing. I want to focus on my work. My friends tease me a lot though. They’ve watched all the episodes in which Naitik and Akshara go on dates. They’re really looking forward to my on-screen shaadi now.
