‘I know zilch about serials’
Akshay Kumar doesn’t understand why TV actors wake up with make-up and embroidered saris in daily soaps; prefers infotainment instead.tv Updated: Jul 04, 2011 17:23 IST
He readily produces movies, with minimal fear of failure. Most of his productions have fetched him great returns. His TV shows, Khatron Ke Khiladi and MasterChef India have been popular watches too.
However, actor-producer Akshay Kumar admits he’ll never produce a TV soap, although his mother and maami (maternal aunt) don’t ever miss a single episode of the million on-going tearjerkers.
“I can’t get these women ever,” he says with a chuckle. “I don’t understand how do they sleep and wake-up with so much make-up and heavily embroidered saris and salwar suits. And for some strange reason, I always find one or the other woman crying.”
He recalls watching a TV serial capsule to give his mother company. “I don’t remember the name of the show but there are strange issues, and even stranger solutions to them in the serials. Sometimes, it becomes difficult for me to tell one show from the other. I must admit, all those women like my mother and maami who watch these shows and keep a track of each one of them should get a gallantry award.”
Considering that his mother and maami love watching daily soaps revolving around the kitchen sink, husbands and kids, wouldn’t he want to produce a TV soap for them? “No way!” he says. “I don’t mind them watching those shows because I’m sure there’s something they relate with. But I don’t think I’m game for producing a soap. It’s a different ball game. I know how movies work. I know zilch about TV serials.”
When asked what is it that he watches on the tube, if and when he does, the action hero Akshay who is currently hosting the fourth edition of Khatron Ke Khiladi on Colors, states that he prefers infotainment to entertainment.
“My son Aarav and I watch shows on History, NatGeo, Animal Planet and Discovery. Sometimes, even news channels have some interesting capsules. Whenever I have the time, I switch to one of these channels,” he says, adding, “My son has always been attuned to these channels. We also watch cartoons together. But TV serials? Never!”
