R Madhavan, last seen as one of the 3 Idiots in Raju Hirani’s film, will now be hosting a show that’s being produced by Big Synergy and Siddharth Basu for Imagine. The show is called Big Money and offers a booty of one crore to the winner.

It’s reportedly based on an American format called Family Links, where a family of four would compete to win physical assets like cars and home accessories.

Nikhil Madhok of Imagine confirms that the show will be hosted by Madhavan and will go on air in July. He admits that it’s a desi remake of the Family Links: “The basic structure has been taken from that show but we have made our own modifications to it.

For instance, the families there had to answer general knowledge questions. Here, they have to answer questions on TV about TV. By TV, I mean shows, advertisements, news and everything else that falls under the umbrella of TV.”

Why Madhavan as a host? Madhok reasons that the actor started his career on TV and eventually forayed into films. “He’s a popular fresh face. People relate to him a lot after his 3 Idiots success. Many recall his characters from the TV shows he did. TV was a homecoming for him.

It’s a family show with interaction between the families and the host. In that respect, he came across as an easy and chilled out guy. He didn’t have to be fine-tuned into his role. He knew it perfectly well and is a discovery as a host,” adds Madhok.

No replacement
The show is expected to go on air in July, shortly after Desi Girl gets over and is expected to occupy the same slot — Friday-Saturday, 9 pm — as Desi Girl. Madhok, however, says that the channel hasn’t locked the date and slot for the show. “We’ll only know in two weeks.”

Once, it was rumoured that Amitabh Bachchan would be doing a game show with Imagine and it would be produced by Big Synergy and helmed by Siddharth Basu.

Wonder if it was the same show that’s now being shot with Madhavan? Madhok denies: “I’m not aware of a game show that we were to do with Mr Bachchan.

Big Synergy and Imagine started working on the tentatively titled Bada Game Kheloge only in the February-March window this year.” Siddharth Basu echoes Madhok’s statement, “We are not doing anything with Amitabh Bachchan on Imagine, we never were. So, there’s no question of Madhavan replacing him in this show.”

Madhok claims that the show will engage viewers, in the studio and at home, because, “everyone would know the answers; the questions will be simple. Everyone will connect because everyone watches or has watched TV at some point.

The show has an emotional subtext too because you never know, the granny of the family might win Rs 25 lakh by answering her question correctly and the family would unite on that note. It’s a with-the-family-for-the-family concept”.

So, will there be celebrity families too? “Surely, but only for special episodes. We want to have as many regular families as possible. That will make the show special,” says Madhok.

The show is expected to be shot at RK Studios and the work on the look of the set is under progress right now. Once the set gets the green signal from all the concerned authorities, the shooting will commence on the bi-weekly.
