Though stand-up comic Bharti Singh became a popular figure on TV with her talent on Comedy Circus, it was Colors’s dance reality show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, that helped her expand her horizons. She has not only won accolades for her performances and her sense of humour, but has also bagged three movies.
Bharti says, “I have signed Khiladi 786 that stars Akshay Kumar. I am excited about my role. I have two comic parts — that of a press reporter and a maid. In the end, it will be revealed that it was one person masquerading as two. I can’t talk about the other two films just yet.”
Bharti faced difficulties while doing some of the lifts and twirls on the dance show. “I really feel depressed at times when other contestants do them with ease, but it takes me time as I weigh 84 kg. I start panting while rehearsing sometimes but I have to keep going. Doing Jhalak… has been stressful, yet I wanted to do something different in life.
I’m happy for this opportunity.” Being overweight would deter others from participating in a dance show, but that only egged Bharti to give her best. Three months down the line, she is among the top five contestants battling for the crown.
Ask Bharti about flirting with judge Remo D’Souza and she says, “It’s all harmless fun. Both of us know it, as does his wife. I’m a huge fan of his and don’t mind expressing myself on the show. He blushes a lot when I joke so it gets interesting to tease him some more.”
