A rare severe storm battered parts of northern and central Arizona with golf ball-sized hail and damaging winds, leaving roofs damaged, windows shattered and cars dented. Hailstones measuring up to 3 inches across struck areas as thunderstorms swept through the state overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. The National Weather Service issued multiple severe weather warnings and tornado watches, marking Arizona's first such watches since October 6, 2010. Strong winds also toppled dozens of tall ponderosa pine trees in Coconino National Forest. Forecasters warned that heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding around the Phoenix metropolitan area overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning.
