Saudi air defences reportedly intercepted and destroyed a Houthi-launched drone south of Mecca before it entered the holy city’s restricted airspace, according to the Saudi-led coalition. Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Malki said the September 15 incident was the second reported Houthi attempt to target Mecca, following a ballistic missile launch in 2017. The incident comes amid renewed Houthi gains along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
