While Maharashtra govn gives in to farmers’ demands, Odisha sees its own farmer agitation
On March 12, the farmers’ delegation from Maharashtra held a meeting with a ministerial committee led by Devendra Fadnavis, regarding its demands. The government agreed to most of their demands including that of transferring forest land to its original tillers, diluting the conditions for loan waivers and extending the benefit of the waivers to those whose loans have been pending since 2001. The farmers withdrew their protest after the government gave them written assurances. On the same day, hundreds of farmers in Odisha marched up to the Assembly to demand an increase in the minimum support price of paddy and a pension scheme for farmers over the age of 60.
