In April, Ukraine announced the arrest of fugitive pro-Russian politician Medvedchuk in a 'lightning-fast' operation. Viktor Medvedchuk is widely seen as the closest ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine. Viktor Medvedchuk bankrolled the opposition platform – For Life, the largest pro-Russian party in Ukraine. Medvedchuk's child has Putin as a godfather - the Russian president baptised Darya, the tycoon's daughter. Medvedchuk's party was among the 11 parties suspended last month for Russia links. Charged with treason & put under house arrest last year, the tycoon also allegedly tried to fund rebels in east Ukraine. Rearrested later, Viktor Medvedchuk managed to escape soon after Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
