Romulus Whitaker, a multiple-award-winning conservationist and India’s leading herpetologist, is writing a three-part autobiography with his wife, author and conservationist Janaki Lenin. Volume 1, tentatively titled Snakes, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll (for the three obsessions of his youth), is due for release in 2024. For the books, Whitaker and Lenin are drawing on field notebooks he maintained through the years, as well as the many scraps of paper he’s always noting things down on. He’d love to include every detail, but Lenin won’t let him, he says, laughing. Excerpts from an interview.
