Olympic torch starts tour of mainland China

Jubilant Chinese crowds cheered as the Olympic torch started its journey through mainland China on May 4. The torch arrived in China's tropical southern island of Hainan late on May 3 from the former Portuguese colony Macau, amid tight security. The starting point for the relay on Sunday was a small man-made island just off the beach resort of Sanya. The torch will continue through the Chinese provinces, before being carried into the Olympic Games Opening ceremony on August 8.
