German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Kyiv as Russian drone attacks intensified, meeting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to deepen Ukraine-Germany defence and energy cooperation. Germany announced more than €1.3 billion in fresh support: €1 billion in military aid, including long-range weapons, combat drones, satellite technology and funding for interceptor drones; plus around €350 million for generators, substations and repairs to Ukraine’s war-damaged energy system. The two countries are expanding joint production of drones designed to counter Russia’s jet-powered attack drones, while work has begun on UAV units and related training in Germany. Zelenskyy said the partnership benefits both countries by sharing technology and battlefield experience.
