Three scientists were jointly awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology. Americans Harvey J Alter, Charles M Rice & British scientist Michael Houghton won the prestigious award. The three scientists were awarded the Nobel for the discovery of the Hepatitis C virus. The US-British trio's work helped explain a major source of blood-borne hepatitis. Their discovery allowed rapid development of antiviral drugs directed at Hepatitis C. The medicine prize carried particular significance this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The award for work on virus has put the global spotlight on science and research. The trio will share the Nobel Prize sum of 10 million Swedish kronor (about $1.1 million).
